Homeless Camp Puts Face On Growing Problem | Conway, Arkansas | Today’s THV 11
Advocates working to end homelessness are trying a more hands-on approach to bring positive changes. They turned Conway’s Simon Park into a homeless camp, spending Monday night out on the street.
“It was cold, but we had a renewed purpose,” says Patricia Hoskins with Habitat for Humanity of Faulkner County. “Our homeless numbers are going up and we knew that it was important for us to take a stance and let people know it matters.”
This is the second year for the homeless camp, held in recognition of World Habitat Day 2011. Approximately eight people spent the night in either cardboard boxes or sitting in lawnchairs.
Julie McDonald of Greenbrier was one of those that participated.
“What really brings it home to me is that I get to go home and have a warm house and a warm bed and the residents we’re trying to bring attention to don’t have that,” says McDonald.
