Number Of Homeless Students Soaring In Baltimore Co. | Baltimore, Maryland | WBALTV

Baltimore County school administrators are reaching into shelters, local motels and the homes of temporary care givers in an effort to reach and teach the county’s homeless students.

“We want to make sure they have support. We have tutoring programs to provide extra educational support for them in the homeless shelters, and we just moved that program out into the school for some of the homeless students,” said pupil personnel worker Carl Love.

“I think for years, people thought about homeless people as the person standing on the street corner,” said Love.

But the homeless population increasingly includes children in need of an education and stability. Already more than 1,000 homeless students have been identified in county schools in 2011. The county’s homeless student population has increased more than 600 percent — from 314 in 2001 to 1,914 in 2010, said WBAL-TV 11 News education reporter Tim Tooten. There are 10,000 homeless students in Maryland.
