According to an annual point-in-time Census survey conducted in the last week of January, the homeless population is on the rise in an upward trend of more than 2,000 people in Okaloosa and Walton counties, and half of those are children.
So whose problem is it, and what’s being done to help? Newschannel 7 investigates in Part 1 of our Special Series, Life on the Streets.
They are a small group, a hidden population that doesn’t exactly “blend in” in this tourist town.
Kathleen McGee works at St. Andrew’s by the Sea and has been a Godsend for the homeless community.
“People say ‘well we don’t have any homeless people here’, that’s not true. Everyone thinks it’s elite and everyone has money, that’s not true” McGee says.
