Modeling was Elena Davis’ way out of poverty.

Born in northern California, her childhood was filled with welfare offices and transient homes.

“At times we didn’t have enough food to eat,” said Davis, a former 1980s fashion model who founded I Am Waters, a nonprofit organization to address water deprivation among the nation’s homeless. “When you’re homeless and you’re poor, you feel like you don’t belong anywhere. It really erodes at your self-esteem.”

The Water Project

HOUSTON, TEXAS — Water Water everywhere but for some it is not that easy. To create awareness, UNICEF launched the Tap Project, an award winning campaign designed to provide clean water to children around the world. Every day 4,000 children die of water related diseases, and nearly 900 million people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. Houston was selected as one of only five national enhanced markets to implement the campaign this year, which involved a leadership team to direct efforts. During World Water Week, March 19-25, various restaurants encouraged patrons to donate $1 or more. In Addition, former supermodel Elena Davis spoke to the Rotary Club of Houston Skyline about her I Am Waters Foundation that provides spiritual and physical hydration to the homeless.

I Am Waters would sincerely like to thank our 2011 shelter partners, listed below, for allowing us to distribute 300,000 of our specially branded water bottles made especially for the homeless, through their organizations in summer 2011. We applaud each of these organizations for the amazing work they do to help homeless men, women and children in Texas to restore stability to their lives. We are humbled to be part of their efforts and contribute to ending the problem of homelessness in America.

I Am Waters Delivers 76,000 Bottles of Water for Austin’s Homeless | Austin, Texas | KUT News NPR Digital Network

AUSTIN, TEXAS – With a heat wave blasting Austin with triple-digit temperatures earlier than usual, two local non-profits have learned they will be receiving a total of 76,000 bottles of water to hand out to the city’s homeless population.

The Houston-based I Am Waters Foundation is donating the bottles, each of which includes a motivational phrase on its label. Mobile Loaves and Fishes, which distributes meals to the homeless, will receive 26,000 bottles. The remaining 50,000 will go to Front Steps, an organization that manages the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH), a daytime center and overnight men’s shelter.
