Professor William Roy

William Roy is Professor and former Chair of the Sociology Department at UCLA. His interests revolve around the broad question of how the social world-especially things ordinarily taken for granted-came to be.

His past research has focused on the rise of American industrial corporations, concepts of time and space, American folk music, and currently popular music genres in the twentieth century. His dedication to teaching has been recognized by the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award and the American Sociological Association Distinguished Contribution to Teaching Award.

He is pleased to be involved in this vital project to alleviate the tragedy of homelessness.

It is important that those who reach out care for the whole person, the spirit as well as the body. As a sociologist, I understand the complex interactions that lead people into situations without a home and that interfere with their own attempts to find a solution.

Not only the fact of homelessness but the social stigma of the homelessness status disempowers people, sapping their self-respect and destroying their hope. It is important that those who reach out care for the whole person, the spirit as well as the body. Social science can help discover not only how daunting a problem like homelessness can be but also how important the messages that we convey with our help can be.
